Vijayadashami The demon king of Lanka, Ravana, who had lost his sense of right and wrong, faced defeat at the hands of Shri Rama, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. A fierce battle that was fought between the two symbolised the war between adharma and dharma. Though adharma appeared to be stronger, it fell short of strength to uproot dharma (righteousness). As a result, the Evil had to concede defeat, and the good had to emerge victoriously. Dussehra marks the celebration of the triumph of Shri Rama over Ravana, the King of Lanka, who abducted Mata Sita. Vijaya Dashami also marks the triumph of Goddess Durga over a demon named Mahishasura. Hence, she is known as Mahishasuramardini. In either case, the message remains the same.
